Percutaneous Nephrolithonomy (PCNL) :
is a procedure to remove stones in the kidney or upper ureter that are too large for other forms of stone treatment. It involves making a small 1 cm incision in the patient’s flank area through which a tube is placed into the kidney under x-ray guidance. A small telescope is then passed through the tube in order to see the stone, break it up and remove it from the body. The benefits of PCNL include less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to daily activities as compared to open stone surgery.
Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy (URSL) –
typically performed with the patient under general anaesthesia, the procedure entails insertion of a ureteroscope, a long, thin cable with a tiny camera at the end, through the urethra and bladder into the ureter or kidney. X-ray images with a contrast dye enable the urologist to see where the stone is located. Once located, it is pulled out with a “stone basket” or a laser is used to break the stone into smaller pieces before extraction.
Cystolithotripsy (CLT)
is performed to remove bladder stones. In this procedure, a camera is inserted through the urethra to locate the stones. Then a lithotripter, which is attached to the camera, is used to crush the stones into small pieces before removing them. At the end of the procedure, a catheter is placed.
