About the Role:
The Infection Control Nurse plays a crucial role in preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) within the hospital. The ICN is responsible for implementing infection control policies, conducting surveillance, training clinical and non-clinical staff, ensuring compliance with NABH and statutory guidelines, and coordinating with the Infection Control Officer (ICO) and Infection Control Committee (ICC). The role directly contributes to patient safety and quality care by maintaining high standards of hygiene and infection prevention.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of infection prevention protocols, aseptic techniques, and biomedical waste management.
- Familiarity with NABH standards, surveillance methods, and audit procedures.
- Excellent observation, documentation, and analytical skills.
- Ability to train staff and communicate infection control guidelines effectively.
- Good knowledge of vaccinations, PPE use, sterilization, and disinfection procedures.
- Ability to work independently and coordinate with multiple departments.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine surveillance of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).
- Monitor high-risk areas such as ICUs, OTs, dialysis units, and procedure rooms.
- Track needle-stick injuries, exposure incidents, and maintain incident logs.
- Gather and analyze infection data; prepare monthly infection control reports.
- Ensure strict adherence to hand hygiene protocols.
- Monitor sterilization and disinfection practices in CSSD and various departments.
- Audit compliance with environmental cleaning, PPE usage, and aseptic techniques.
- Ensure proper segregation and disposal of biomedical waste as per BMW norms.
- Conduct regular training sessions for nursing, housekeeping, and other staff on infection control.
- Educate teams on standard precautions, transmission-based precautions, and outbreak management.
- Participate in hospital-wide infection control awareness programs.
- Assist the Infection Control Officer (ICO) in conducting ICC meetings.
- Support quality teams during NABH, internal, and external audits.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) based on audit findings.
- Participate in outbreak investigations (e.g., clusters of infections).
- Coordinate sampling, analysis, and implementation of containment measures.
- Maintain accurate and updated infection control manuals, SOPs, and training records.
- Ensure compliance with NABH, statutory guidelines, and hospital policies.
- Prepare reports for regulatory bodies when required.
